Ca a commencé avec notre chauffeur à Petra : « Comment ! Vous n’allez pas à Wadi Rum ? Le désert où T.E Lawrence a réuni ses troupes pour la grande révolte arabe, où David Lean a tourné les scènes mythiques de Lawrence d’Arabie, où on a donné le nom des Sept Piliers de la Sagesse à une montagne en hommage au livre de Lawrence, le désert le plus célèbre du monde, celui dont tous vos amis vont vous parler ! »
Moi : Vous croyez ?
Lui : Sûr
Moi : C’est loin ?
Lui : De Petra- Environ une heure trente de route, mais je peux faire plus vite.
Moi : Comment plus vite ?
Lui : Beaucoup plus vite.
Moi : Et sur place, il faut compter combien de temps ?
Lui : Trois heures, quatre heures.
Moi : Et on peut faire plus vite ?
Pour nous, ça a été 45 minutes. Parce que nous n’avions pas le temps. Parce que nous devions être ailleurs dans l’après-midi. Parce que tout s’est décidé au dernier moment. Parce que c’était inattendu, et que ça, c’est amusant.
Si vous devez faire pareil ? Je n’irais pas jusque là. Wadi Rum mérite beaucoup plus. Tous les déserts méritent plus. Les rochers qui surgissent au milieu des dunes pourpres, les camps bédouins, les tentes adossées aux falaises rouges, les djebels jaunes et noirs… Vous ne verrez pas ça tous les jours. Un détail : Vous pouvez passer la nuit à la belle étoile ou camper sur place dans des tentes bédouines. Et pour ceux qui n’auraient pas tout suivi : Non, Wadi Rum n’est pas un apéritif.

Him – From Petra, about an hour, an hour and a half by road, though l could make it quicker.
Me – How much quicker?
Him – A lot quicker.
Me – And once there, how long would it take?
Him – Three, four hours.
Me – Could this be quicker too ?
For us it was 45 minutes because we didn’t have the time, because we had to be somewhere else that afternoon, because it had all been decided at the last minute. Because it was unexpected and that is fun.
Should you do the same ? I won’t go that far . Wadi Run merits much more time. All deserts deserve more.The rocks that surge amongst the purple dunes, the bedouin encampments backed against the red cliff-faces, the yellow and black djebels… You won’t see that every day. One detail; you can spend one night sleeping under the stars or camp in a bedouin tent. And for those of you who wonder; No, Wadi Rum is not an aperitif.
