Beaucoup de personnes m’ont demandé mes adresses en Jordanie. J’en donne généralement avec presque toutes mes histoires, mais pour ce pays si spécial, j’ai pensé que je pouvais faire une page… spéciale.
Comme mon vol arrivait tard à Amman, je voulais un bel hôtel, bien situé, que les taxis pouvaient trouver facilement, – j’avais aussi envie de voir à quoi ressemblait la Jordanie moderne – j’ai donc choisi le Four Seasons. Si vous voulez en savoir plus allez ici.
A Petra, j’ai passé une nuit à l’hôtel Movenpick situé juste à l’entrée du site – ce qui permet d’être tôt sur les lieux sans avoir à se lever à 5h du matin… J’aurais dû rester deux jours pour voir le site illuminé la nuit, mais je ne savais pas… Maintenant vous, vous savez.
Après un site aussi célèbre et « organisé » que Petra je voulais voir une facette complètement différente du pays, j’ai donc passé deux jours au Feynan Ecolodge, perdu au milieu de nulle part, dans la Dana Biosphere Reserve. Ici, vous faites des treks dans les montagnes, approchez 800 espèces de plantes, 500 sortes d’animaux, et aussi les villages bédouins… Les guides sont des bédouins, ils ont un sacré sens de l’humour, et vous feront un thé à la menthe mémorable – l’un des meilleurs que j’ai jamais goûté, en fait. Le lodge n’a pas l’électricité, la nourriture est végétarienne, et quand vous arrivez la nuit et que tout est seulement éclairé à la bougie vous avez l’impression d’entrer dans la Twilight zone… C’est une expérience, ça c’est sûr…
Pour finir, j’avais envie de calme, dans un endroit encore différent. J’ai choisi l’Evason Ma’ In Hot Springs, tout près de la Mer Morte, entouré de sources d’eau chaude. La vallée est spectaculaire. Elle montre la Jordanie verte, presque tropicale, à moins d’une heure d’Amman – ce qui évite de se préparer trois heures à l’avance pour prendre son vol – qui dans mon cas, était à 2h du matin…
Je n’ai pas loué de voiture pendant ce voyage, parce que qui a envie de tourner en rond pendant trois heures dans le désert jordanien à la recherche de son hôtel en pleine nuit ? J’ai demandé aux concierges des hôtels de m’appeler un chauffeur pour aller à l’endroit suivant. Et j’ai bien fait. Tout s’est parfaitement passé, les chauffeurs parlaient couramment anglais, cela m’a dégagé de tout stress et donné l’occasion d’avoir des conversations très inattendues… comme celle avec mon chauffeur de Wadi Rum.

Jordan – Hotels, my favorite places and some extras
Many of you have asked for my list of favourite places in Jordan. I usually include these with nearly all of my stories, but this time, I thought that this special country deserved a special page.
As my flight landed late at Amman airport, I wanted to stay in a very nice and well-known hotel that a taxi could easily find. I also wanted to see what the modern Jordan was like. So I chose the Four Seasons. If you would like further details click here.
In Petra, I spent a night at the Movenpick Resort, located right near the entrance to the historic site of Petra. I therefore managed to get to the site very early the following morning, without having to get up at 5 o’clock… But I should have stayed two days to be able to see the site lit up at night. I didn’t know about that… but now you know so…
After a site as famous and as well-run as Petra, I wanted to see a completely different side of things. So I spent two days at the Feynan Ecolodge, in what felt like the middle of nowhere, deep in the heart of the Dana Biosphere Reserve. There you will enjoy mountain hikes amongst 800 plant species and 500 different animal species, Bedouin encampments, and much more. All the native Bedouin guides have a very wry sense of humour and their mint tea is simply unforgettable – in fact it was one of the best cups of tea I have ever had. There is no electricity at the lodge and all the food is vegetarian. Arriving late at night to find this candle-lit lodge under the stars is a bit like entering the Twilight Zone… Definitely an experience…
To end my trip, I wanted some peace and quiet, once again, in a different setting. So I chose the Evason Ma’in Hot Springs, near the Dead Sea, surrounded by hot water springs. The valley is simply spectacular, showing just how green, nearly tropical, Jordan is. Yet less than an hour away from Amman airport – which means that you don’t have to get ready for your flight three hours in advance – Mine was 2 o’clock in the morning… I didn’t rent a car for this trip because who wants to drive around in circles for hours on end in the Jordanian desert to try and find their hotel in the middle of the night? So I asked the hotel porters to find a driver to take me to my next destination. And I am very glad I did that. Everything went extremely smoothly and as all the drivers spoke fluent English, I was not in the least bit stressed. It also meant that I could have the most unexpected conversations… like the one with my driver from Wadi Rum.
